Skincare Awareness Month is the perfect time to focus on understanding your skin type and how it changes as you age. From your 20s to your 50s and beyond, your skin has different needs, and it’s important to tailor your skincare routine accordingly.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the different skin types and how you can care for your skin at every stage of life. Whether you’re building a foundation in your 20s, focusing on prevention in your 30s, targeting visible changes in your 40s, or embracing your skin’s maturity in your 50s and beyond, Stamina Cosmetics has the right products to support your journey for skin well-aging.
Skin Types: Understanding the Basics
Before diving into age-specific skincare, it’s important to identify your skin type. Various factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle influence your skin type. Here are the four main skin types:
- Normal Skin: Balanced skin with minimal imperfections, not too oily or dry.
- Oily Skin: Skin that produces excess oil, often leading to shine and enlarged pores. This type is also more prone to clogged pores, acne and blemishes.
- Dry Skin: Skin that lacks moisture, often feeling tight, rough, and prone to flaking.
- Combination Skin: A mix of oily and dry areas, typically with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry cheeks.
- Sensitive: A more reactive skin type due to more vulnerable skin barrier. Hence can present unpredictably as rashy, itchy, stingy, and with more acne like breaktous. Individuals with skin eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea prone individuals usually have sensitive skin type.
- Pigmented: If you easily get skin blotches, blemishes, melasma, suns spots, and frequent discolorations, then you likely have pigementation-prone skin type.

Light to Dark Skin Types
Another important classification of our skin types is based on our pigment levels and is called Fitzpatrick Scale is a pigmentation classification system which allows skin care professionals to categorize skin shades, predisposition to sunburn, sun damage, and skin cancer risks for patients. This is based on scientific evidence that lighter skin shades have higher UV (ultraviolet) radiation damage predisposition and darker skin tones have higher skin resilience against this damage based on the natural higher concentration and type of melanin, a skin pigment. Melanin absorbs UV light and oxidative stress on the skin’s surface and protects against the sun damaging rays. Interestingly, in darker toned individuals this translates to not only lower skin cancer risks but also more skin endurance and delayed photoaging (wrinkles, skin laxity).
So Skin types I-II, for example, are the palest tones and have higher freckles and are easily prone to sunburn and photoaging. If you have an olive complexion and can tan, then you are in the mid skin type III range. Meanwhile, types V-VI are the darkest, rarely to sun burn and easily tan, and have slower photoaging process.
Now that we understand skin types better, , let’s explore how these evolve with age and how you can care for it at different stages of life.
